What is GoHighlevel Email Marketing?
Suppose you have been in sales as long as I have. In that case, you might remember the days before the Internet when businesses had to advertise in magazines or spend lots of money doing direct mailers to potential customers. In those days, the sales cycle was long because you had to create the mailer, get it printed, and then mail it out to the customers. You then had to wait for the mailer to get to the customer and then wait for them to respond if they ever did. Well, those days for business are dead because there is a new, more cost-effective method to reach your customer. You guessed it, email marketing.
Email marketing campaigns have been around for decades and have proven a great way to reach and keep your customers updated on your business. One of the great things about email marketing is that it can be done inexpensively, and people are willing to give you their email addresses to build your customer database if you give them something in return. It could be something as simple as 5% off your next purchase or a free cup of coffee.
You need a database to store all your customer information to do email marketing effectively. You must have at least the customer’s name and email address to start. Hopefully, you can get their first and last name to make it easier to customize email messages for each customer. You don’t need anything complicated at first. You can get started with just a spreadsheet to track that information.
The problem that businesses run into is that it’s hard to track which customer you emailed and when you emailed them. Also, what happens if a customer purchases something from you or even multiple products how do you keep track of all that information regarding each customer? Now that spreadsheet does not seem to be a good idea anymore.
What you need is a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. This software was built to hold tons of customer information and keep track of purchases and all communications you have ever had with each customer. It’s the core of your business.
Now that you have your CRM system, you will need software to help you create professional-looking emails with graphics, animation, and even video. This software is typically referred to as an email builder tool.
You will create the same email repeatedly with slight variations to send to new customers when they signup. You will need software that will allow you to create email templates to store a generic version of the email and then use that template each time you contact a new customer.
Most email marketing is not just sending a single email to a customer but rather an email marketing campaign. When you get a new lead or customer in your business, you will want to have a series of emails to send to the customer over days, weeks or even months to build rapport and educate them about your products and services. To do this, you will need a scheduling system to track when to send the following email to clients that sign up at other times.
When you combine all the tools I just discussed, you will have an effective email campaign for your marketing efforts.
Several email marketing platforms are currently available, but none offer the full feature set that GoHighlevel does.
The good news is that GoHighlevel has all of these tools and features in its software platform and so much more.
What is GoHighlevel/Highlevel?
GoHighlevel, or just Highlevel as its users call it, is an all-in-one sales and marketing platform for marketing agencies and small businesses. The GoHighlevel platform offers every tool needed to run a business successfully at a fixed monthly cost. The GoHighlevel platform allows you to Whitelabel their software so agencies can use this platform and brand it like it was their own. This allows agencies to create a Software as a Service (SaaS) business and an additional monthly recurring revenue stream.
Typically agencies would perform a job for their client like building a website or running Facebook ads only to have the job end or the client cancel their service. Now, agencies have to continue to market to find another client. Now with GoHighlevel, you can migrate your clients off whatever CRM, email marketing tool, phone system, or funnel software they may be using and run their business entirely off the GoHighlevel platform. The best thing about this is that your clients pay you monthly for these services. You can charge $297, $497, or whatever you want to charge for these services and your client continues to pay for these each month like a utility creating a stable recurring monthly revenue.
GoHighlevel sets no limits for its users on any paid plan so you can have unlimited contacts, websites, funnels, email or text templates, and workflows. There are also no limits for storage so you can host as many videos, files, documents, or images as you or your clients may have.

GoHighlevel & Email Marketing
Let’s talk about how the GoHighlevel platform handles email marketing and, more specifically, email campaigns. We will cover all the tools we discussed earlier that you would need to run a successful email campaign.
CRM
The CRM feature is the heart of GoHighlevel. Every tool that has been and will be created revolves around integrating with the CRM. If the contact record does not have a field you need, say you want to store the contact’s wedding anniversary date, GoHighlevel has the ability for you to create an unlimited number of custom fields to track any specific information about your customer that you want. You are allowed to have an unlimited number of contacts in your account with no additional monthly charges. BTW other CRM software charges you based on the number of contacts in your system. If you get too many, you have to upgrade your plan. Let’s look at the CRM contact record.
In the blue area, you see all the fields containing data regarding your contact. You can also see if the contact has any tags, if they are in an active campaign or workflow if they are in any pipeline/opportunity stage, and any offers/products they have purchased from you. You also see if they have opted out of certain communications.
The area in red shows you every communication you have ever had with this contact. Any inbound calls, SMS, or emails are listed here for review. You can also send the contact a message directly from this screen via SMS or email.
The area in purple shows you any activity that the contact has done in your account, any appointments they have ever had, any notes you or the team have had about the contact, and see any tasks associated with the contact.
As you can see, the GoHighlevel CRM is robust and can handle all your business needs.
Email Templates
GoHighlevel has several ways to handle email templates and campaigns based on your needs. You will find these in the Marketing area.
From the Emails > Templates menu, you are given a couple of choices when creating templates.
You can choose an existing template in your account, choose from a template library of existing emails, start from scratch with a blank template, or even import an existing email you received. If you choose Email Marketing Template, you will have a library of pre-built templates to customize.
If you start from scratch, you can use the email template builder or copy and paste your code to generate the email.
The options above allow you to build fully rich HTML emails. We will look further into the builder in the next section.
If you want to build more simplified email templates, you can use the Marketing > Templates option. You can build both SMS and Email templates in this area, but we will only focus on the email template.
Here is the basic editor that you receive.
You can create a basic email template with images and even attach files if you wish. You can see what the email would look like on a mobile device to make design easier.
Creating templates in either of these areas will allow you to use them in Workflows. We will discuss workflows in the scheduler section of this article.
Email Builder
We have already seen the Marketing > Templates builder in the previous section, so I will focus on the more robust builder in this section.
In the Marketing > Emails > Templates area it does not matter if you choose an existing template from the library or start from scratch you use the same editor.
Here is what the editor looks like
Here are the elements that you have to work with when building a template.
To use any element, drag it over to the email and release it in the area you want it to go. You can then click on it to configure its properties like color and size.
The designer is easy to use and intuitive to understand, so you don’t need previous design experience to use it.
Email Campaign Scheduler
Once you have your customers in the CRM and your email templates are created, you can start to schedule emails to be sent out to your customers. There are two main ways in GoHighlevel to accomplish scheduling. You can use the Marketing > Email > Campaign builder to schedule an email to be sent out and to whom.
When you create a new campaign, you are offered a selection of email templates. Once you select a template, you can select how it is sent to the contact.
You select which template to use.
You then select the option you want to use. Once you select, you can edit the email options.
The campaign gets completed and scheduled. The downside to using this campaign builder is that you can only select one email per campaign. Sometimes you may have several emails sent out in your email campaigns.
To send multiple emails, you must use the Workflow option to build this campaign. I strongly suggest always using Workflows to build your email campaigns because they can handle any number of emails and do other cool stuff.
In the Workflow builder, you have many elements you can choose from. Here are some options you can do with the CRM feature.
Here is what an example of an email campaign might look like for a workflow.
You see, it sends the first email, then waits 1 day, then sends the second email, then waits 2 days, then sends out the third email, etc. You can have as many of these as you want and specify how long between emails.
In the workflow builder, you can use other elements besides email, like sending an SMS or ringless voicemail. The options are limitless of what you can do.
